For high sand content greens, an outside–sharpened scalloped shell makes it easier to take a plug in one cut.

It cuts with less effort, compacts better and holds the entire plug, and its outside edge is easier to sharpen.

For heavier soils—requiring two or more cuts—any shell combination will work.
